The Coriolis Effect



In physics, the Coriolis effect is an apparent deflection of moving objects when they are viewed from a rotating reference frame. In a reference frame with clockwise rotation, the deflection is to the left of the motion of the object; in one with anti-clockwise rotation, the deflection is to the right. The mathematical expression for the Coriolis force appeared in an 1835 paper by a French scientist Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis in connection with hydrodynamics, and also in the tidal equations of Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1778. Early in the 20th century, the term Coriolis force began to be used in connection with meteorology.

The Coriolis effect is caused by the Coriolis force. Newton's laws of motion govern the motion of an object in an inertial frame of reference. When Newton's laws are transformed to a rotating frame of reference, the Coriolis and centrifugal forces appear. Both forces are proportional to the mass of the object. The Coriolis force is proportional to the rotation rate and the centrifugal force is proportional to its square. The Coriolis force acts in a direction perpendicular to the rotation axis and to the velocity of the body in the rotating frame and is proportional to the object's speed in the rotating frame. The centrifugal force acts outwards in the radial direction and is proportional to the distance of the body from the axis of the rotating frame. These additional forces are termed either inertial forces, fictitious forces or pseudo forces.[1] These names are used in a technical sense, to mean simply that the forces vanish in an inertial frame of reference.

Perhaps the most commonly encountered rotating reference frame is the Earth. Because the Earth rotates only once per day, the Coriolis force is quite small, and its effects generally become noticeable only for motions occurring over large distances and long periods of time, such as large-scale movement of air in the atmosphere or water in the ocean. Such motions are constrained by the 2-dimensional surface of the earth, so only the horizontal component of the Coriolis force is generally important. This force causes moving objects on the surface of the Earth to appear to veer to the right in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in the southern. Rather than flowing directly from areas of high pressure to low pressure, as they would on a non-rotating planet, winds and currents tend to flow to the right of this direction north of the equator, and to the left of this direction south of the equator. This effect is responsible for the rotation of large cyclones (see Coriolis effects in meteorology).

Race Maps Of America


New York - The dots are so dense they almost cannot help but be separated - yet the Big Apple still has clear pockets of ethnicity.

These are the maps that show the racial breakdown of America’s biggest cities.

Using information from the latest U.S. census results, the maps show the extent to which America has blended together the races in the nation’s 40 largest cities.

With one dot equalling 25 people, digital cartographer Eric Fischer then colour-coded them based on race, with whites represented by pink, blacks by blue, Hispanic by orange, and Asians by green. Gray is other.

The resulting maps may not represent what many might expect Barack Obama’s integrated rainbow nation to look like, as many cities have clear racial dividing lines. (Click the name of each city to view its map.)

In New York, the boundaries are so intensely coloured that they can hardly avoid being integrated. While the different racial groups still have their own areas, it is one of the most diverse of the major urban cities.

Detroit, for example, is infamous for its divide between black and white. But the map shows such a clear separation along the Eight Mile beltway that it is startling - almost bordering on segregation.

The strict east-west divide in Washington DC is also well known - but chilling to see so starkly outlined on the map of the nation's capital.

And in Los Angeles, the Latino population dominates the poorer areas of the city.

But, reassuringly, the maps do show that not all American cities are so divided.



San Antonio: The Texan city blurs the lines better than most - though a divide can still be seen.

San Antonio in Texas paints a much better picture of integration, with whites and Hispanics blurring the boundaries and no real sign of a rich white enclave.

Another Texan city, Houston, also shows a richer diversity of races spreading out from the centre and Las Vegas boasts a good mix.

San Francisco also presents a better picture of racial integration together with a larger Asian contingent.

The maps have quickly become a source of fascination for bloggers, even though the data used is a decade out of date.

‘I’d love to see the income data presented this way, too,’ said one.

Good magazine's Andrew Price said: 'What do we, as a society, want to see in maps like this? I think it's safe to say that the clear separation of races in Detroit is a symptom (or cause) of serious social problems.

'At the same time,' he added, 'it seems unrealistic to expect perfect integration and it's unclear if we should want that anyway. It's great that our cities have vibrant ethnic neighbourhoods.'

The maps are based on information from the 2000 census, but Mr Fischer, 37, said in a blog on his Flickr site: ‘I intend to do a 2010 version as soon as the census finishes tabulating the data. I think the full release is planned for next June.’

He told the Washington Post: 'I always knew that cities had these racial divisions, but seeing them set out so graphically, that was the striking thing about them.'

Eye Floaters

(I thought it was just me..)



Today I found out what causes eye floaters.

For those who’ve never experienced this phenomenon, eye floaters are little oddly shaped objects that appear in your vision, often when one looks at bright light such as a blue sky. Their shapes vary greatly, but will often appear as spots, cobwebs, or randomly shaped stringy objects. These are not optical illusions, but rather something your eyes are actually perceiving. There are a few different things that can cause this, but in most cases these eye floaters are caused by pieces of the gel-like vitreous breaking off from the back portion of your eye and then floating about in your eye ball.

The vitreous humor, or often just “vitreous”, is a clear gel that fills the gap between your retina and lens, helping maintain the round shape of your eye in the process. This gel is about 99% water and 1% other elements; the latter of which consists mostly of a network of hyaluronic acid and collagen. Hyaluronic acid ends up retaining water molecules. Over time though, this network breaks down which results in the hyaluronic acid releasing its trapped water molecules. When this happens, it forms a watery core in your vitreous body.

As you age then, pieces of the still gel-like collagen/hyaluronic acid network will break off and float around in this watery center. When light passes through this area, it creates a shadow on your retina. This shadow is actually what you are seeing when you see the eye floaters.

America's Scariest Highways



To identify the nation's scariest highways we sought advice from Mark Sedenquist and Megan Edwards, who run RoadTrip America, as well as from Marree Forbes (no affiliation with Forbes Inc.), who runs the site American Driving Vacations, and Robert Dolezal, author of The Most Scenic Drives in America: 120 Spectacular Road Trips.

Mark Sedenquist and Megan Edwards' California home was destroyed by a forest fire in 1993. Instead of rebuilding, the couple bought an RV and took to the open road, traveling across the U.S. and Canada for almost seven years.

The couple has since settled in Las Vegas, but they continue to take driving vacations and encourage others to do the same on their website, RoadTrip America, which they run through Flattop Productions, their small business. Sedenquist and Edwards estimate they've traveled over 650,000 miles.

Highway 1 (Florida)

Outside of Key West this roadway turns into a two-lane bridge that crosses an expansive body of shallow water that reflects blinding sunlight. On top of that, "it's really tough for the driver to stay focused because everything around you is so blue," Sedenquist says. This stretch of highway is also troublesome during hurricane warnings because it is the only way out and gets packed with evacuees.


Interstate 70 (Colorado)

I-70 through Denver has one of the highest passes on all the interstates, and its steep hills can be extremely slick in the winter. In bad weather "you just stay in your lane, don't touch your brakes, and hope you make it to the bottom," Sedenquist says.


Pacific Coast Highway (California)

Although it has beautiful views, this elevated, curvy roadway hangs over the water. But not everyone is sold on its scariness. Marree Forbes' clients always ask if this road is safe to drive, and she thinks "it's total, utter nonsense." The highway is "fabulous," she says.


Highway 1 (Alaska)

Because it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and mountains, this roadway is plagued with accidents. Driving along it can be terrifying "because people are sightseeing and they're not watching the road," Sedenquist says.

Raz Ben Ari: 10 Genres Of Metal In 3 Minutes



Very cool! As I've always said, though, it's when everyone starts trying to classify music into genres, or put labels on music, that the mistake is made in the first place. It is my personal opinion that there are several bands who own their own "genre".

Flip Flop Fly Ball

Thanks to Jonco over at Bits & Pieces, I just ran across an incredible site. If you're like me and like sports AND statistics, you'll love this one. There are literally tons of good stuff here.. It's mostly Major League Baseball charts and graphs, but really a lot more. And a lot of it is stuff you would never think of.

That's what statisticians do - come up with new stats and comparisons that have never before been considered (or realized). I could seriously spend hours at this site. I almost just have!

This is cool - I've always kinda visualized this in my head, especially with football team names, and not just NFL. There's a challenge for ya' Craig! Aw heck, I may just do it and send it to you.


This one blows my mind, and gave me goosebumps when it first hit me. There are obviously major sunset and predominant wind issues here, but what else? How incredible is it that all 30 ballparks are contained within less than 180º? Well it's pretty incredible.


Yeah the Baltimore Colts are in Indy, and the Ravens are in Baltimore. I always wondered why they didn't just give the new Baltimore team their old name, and force Indy to come up with a new one? Similar story with the Arizona/Phoenix (St. Louis/Chicago) Cardinals, the St. Louis (Los Angeles/Cleveland) Rams, and the soon-to-be Los Angeles (Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland) Raiders. And how about those 1943 Phil-Pitt Steagles? Bet that's something you didn't know, unless of course you're from there, or over 75 years old, or both.

The NBA one I have in my head has got to be great too.


Circled in red is Mark McGwire's 33rd homer, which I happened to see live at the Astrodome in Houston. It went high into the left-center seats, which I'm still hitting myself for not getting. We took our chances on foul balls that night, sat up close but over just beyond 1st base, and yes we got a foul ball that day. No it wasn't autographed, and no I can't remember who hit it, but I do know my buddy's daughter was thrilled when Billy Wagner, who was then warming up, tossed it up to us.
