I'm Back!

...from a 3-day trip to Lubbock. Daughter had a second audition for the College of Music at Texas Tech. This trip also included a drive over to Roswell, NM, hence the banner image. Roswell is actually a fun little place, unless you are a serious skeptic to all the hype surrounding its history. The town really banks on its tourism, as there are little aliens literally all over place. Fake ones, of course, but there's probably a real one or two too.

The UFO Museum & Research Center was actually very impressive - especially for an enthusiast such as me. For only $5 you get an incredible amount of information.

Posts will resume back to normal later today!

NBA Dunk Contest Rant

Via

Is anyone else getting tired of these dunk contest participants having multiple tries to complete borderline asinine dunks? Get rid of the 2:00 clock. Give them 1 chance. You don't make it - too bad! OK maybe give them two tries.

What peeves me about this year's, which is almost over as we speak, is not only did several contestants take the whole two minutes, but McGee actually received a 50 for the two-basket dunk on about his 6th try!

And the props are getting ridiculous. Take a look at the highlights, and watch DeMar DeRozan's second dunk of the first-round dunk a few minutes ago. I think it scored a 50, and it was worth every point. Simple, sweet, complex, first try...

And Blake Griffin's in-game throw-down dunk from above the rim was better than all these in this contest.

UPDATE: I found a highlight video, and have posted it below. DeMar DeRozan's 2nd dunk, which received a 50, begins at 1:19. Notice he never touches the ball with his left hand at all.

Listen And Look

Listen to this:

And look at this:

The Ha'iku Stairs, aptly nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven, is a steep climb on the island of Oahu that seems to disappear into the sky itself.

The trail got its start as a simple wooden ladder attached to the cliff. It was installed during World War II to facilitate the building of giant antenna cables between the cliffs above Ha'iku Valley. These, along with a building at the peak, could transmit signals that could reach submarines as far away as Tokyo Bay, reaching the submarines even when they were submerged underwater.

In the 1950s, the wooden stairs were replaced by metal steps and ramps—3,922 steps in all. The trail was officially closed in 1987, but many hikers continue to ignore the "No Trespassing" signs and make the climb for the awe-inspiring view at the top.

A Snow Explosion

Snow explosion in .gif form from last week's blizzards all over the country. Yeah it's already old news by now, but too good not to post at all. Wonder if the guy knew it was packed-on up there like that? If he did, I can imagine his anticipation for hitting the first overpass he got to!

Another image for which I have no information - but it's lovely. The way many areas of regular ground looks from the air is impressive in some places.
