But Sir...

Wow, what an amazingly touching acceptance speech by Emmitt Smith. One of my all-time favorites was just given the greatest honor any player can receive - And no player deserves such an honor more than Emmitt Smith.

Here is the speech: Part 1 -- Part 2 -- Part 3

China's "Straddling" Bus

China is all about the future of transportation. High-speed trains criss cross the countryside, sending people whizzing from Shanghai to Beijing at speeds over 200 miles per hour. And General Motors has even developed a tiny urban car that's designed just for Chinese urban drivers.

But now a company has designed something called a "straddling bus." Basically, it's a huge bus that operates like a train on wheels, and is so tall that cars can drive right under it. Each bus is about two street lanes wide and 18 feet tall, according to Song Youzhou, the chairman of Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Company, which is building these enormous buses.

With Chinese traffic growing rapidly, designers intend to have as many commuters on the road as is efficiently possible. This straddling bus won't get in the way of any buses or cars currently on the roads, and will only add capacity to the public transportation infrastructure.

In a rough translation of Youzhou's presentation I found, he says, "The highlight innovation of the straddling bus is that it runs above cars and under overpass. Its biggest strength is saving road space, efficient and high in capacity."

Youzhou threw out some figures about the impact the straddling bus will have on Chinese traffic. He says they can reduce up to 25 to 30 percent of traffic jams on main routes. Running at an average of 25 miles per hour, it can take 1,200 people at a time, or 300 passengers per cart.

In terms of help to the environment, he says each bus can save up to 860 tons of fuel per year, reducing 2,640 tons of carbon emissions. It is powered partly by solar panels on each bus, but it's powered mostly by electricity.

Either way, it's a lot better than getting around on fossil fuels.

How Mariano Rivera Dominates

Mariano Rivera is one of the most dominant closers in history, but what may be most remarkable is that he has done it by confounding hitters with mostly one pitch - his signature "cutter", or cut fastball.

Having run across this video, along with another infographic over at Chartporn Dot Org, this blew me away. But I'd rather link you to the main article about Rivera. So even if you don't read the entire article (yes it is rather long - but great), at least check out the 2½ minute video. You won't regret it!:

Redneck Moron

Via - (NSFW)

Seriously if you look up "redneck moron" in the dictionary you'll see this .gif.

OK wait a minute. What's a dictionary?

I can't find a bigger one..

Sometimes it's not about reality as much as it is about flat-out imagery. What a great image.

But not only is it an incredible image, it's also the object image in a great photoshop tutorial by FaraZahar. Which is also featured on this Best Photoshop Tutorials for Newbies list...

...and probably a bunch more.

The point is it's a great image. And it's been sent in to a reverse-image search site (tineye dot com) at least 500-600 times. It's the only site I know of to give you the best chance at finding the true source of any image.

One of these days, I'll succeed. LOL

Eventually, ALL images posted here at One For The Road will be HD, and as big as possible.

It's Open Air

I'd paint a HUGE "No" on that if I could. Hilarity would ensue..

I'm really not surprised. Compared with the size of the moon, and the desire to get there after all those years, this is miniscule if you've ever seen a baseball field. Not impressed. I explored more territory behind my house growing up right after dinner on my 11th birthday!

• I general, a man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item she doesn't need, but it's on sale.

• A man has 6 items in his bathroom: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a towel, and a bar of soap. The average number of items a woman has in her bathroom is 337, only about 20 of which a man would be able to identify.

• A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

• A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

• A successful husband is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful wife is one who can find such a man.

• A woman knows everything there is to know about her children. Dentist appointments, best friends, favorite foods, romances, secret fears, and their hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

• A married man should forget his mistakes - after all, there's no need for more than ONE person remembering them.

This Just In - Barracudas Are Dangerous!

Press play, then continue reading the post..

Koral Wira, 14, was fishing with her parents and a friend near Venice, Fla., when a barracuda went for her dad's bait and ended up biting her instead. Her dad, Rob Parker, submitted these photos and Wira told the story.

After anchoring the boat 4 miles off shore, Parker baited his rod with herring. Wira switched seats to get out of the hot sun, and watched as her dad cast. Moments later, she heard a splash and saw a long silver flash in the air. A barracuda jumped from the water and opened its mouth. As it hit her left arm, it clamped down with razor teeth.

When the fish dropped off her arm, Wira said the angled bites made her skin look like raw hamburger meat from the middle of her bicep to below her elbow. She was more scared than in pain, she said.

As the barracuda flopped around the boat, Wira ran to the bow and ducked. Her mom and friend climbed onto their chairs and screamed, while Wira's dad grabbed his filet knife and stabbed the fish behind the eye.

Wira looked down at the still fish and couldn't believe it had bit her. It was 42 inches long and its blood and her own spotted the boat's floor. Her dad cut the anchor with his filet knife and they zoomed back to the shore.

On the trip back, Wira pressed her dad's Red Sox shirt to her arm to slow the bleeding. Her friend was crying, but Wira said she was too shocked to be upset.

Parker opened the barracuda's mouth to check out its rows of razor-sharp teeth. He noticed the fish had taken in his line, but the hook never penetrated. Parker said he suspected his bait herring attracted the fish, causing it to jump. When it flew out of the water toward the boat, it found his daughter instead.

Wira and her dad stopped for a quick picture (the banner image above) before jumping in the car and heading to the hospital. Wira said she wasn't in pain at the moment, but she was still creeped out by the fish. Her arm needed 51 stitches, and doctors told her they had never treated a barracuda bite. Her stitches are out now, and she said her arm is healing.

The look on her face in that picture is priceless. I can almost hear her saying, "Dad, I can't believe you're making me take another picture.. I'm bleeding, here!"

Sacramento Kings' Tyreke Evans Busted

Another PGA Tour 59 - This Time Live - Stuart Appleby

By Shane Bacon

Stuart Appleby continues the year of the 59

Before 2010, the number 59 was a few things. Nearly attainable. A pro golfer's dream. The pinnacle of the PGA Tour.

Now, eight months into this crazy golf year, it has become a score that is expected, not hoped for. Sunday, at the Greenbrier Classic,
Stuart Appleby added his name to the history books, becoming just the second player ever to post 59 in the final round and win. He joined Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval and Paul Goydos as the only players to ever go sub-60 on this tour, and made it the first time it has ever been done by two people in the same season (to be fair, it had barely ever been done in the same decade).

Appleby's 11 under Sunday was good enough to jump seven spots and to win his first PGA Tour title since 2006, which he did by a shot over Jeff Overton at 22 under.

How good was Appleby's 59 compared to some of the others in history? Well,
along with Goydos earlier this season, it was only the second to be done on a course that wasn't a par-72 and included three closing birdies to join the elite club.

His round got going on the par-4 fourth, where he started a run of five birdies in six holes. After pars on the 10th and 11th, Appleby made an eagle on the par-5 12th to move to 8 under for the day and then had the incredible close.

What may be the most interesting thing about this year is that before the season started, most critics were worried about low scores because the USGA had decided to change the groove requirements. I remember posting a story after the Mercedes Championship comparing the final scores this year to previous ones, but it obviously hasn't hurt anyone's ability to go low.

Along with Goydos and Appleby, Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 in a Japanese Tour event, and just last week a high school junior
made news with a ridiculous 57.

I will say this about 59s and 58s ... it sure makes that scorecard of that incredible 71 you once had on your wall look a little less heroic.

Happy Monday

Construction People Are Mean

Better make sure your wheelchair has brakes before attempting this. And maybe an airbag too..

And what's the need for the sign, anyway? Making people aware that there may be people in wheelchairs lumbering down the ramp at 100 miles per hour? Letting people in wheelchairs know, "here's your ramp, Muahahaahaaha"?

Yay - I got out! Oops..
