The 9 People You'll See At Every Golf Course

The Misogynist
Description: He doesn’t so much enjoy golf as he enjoys having an environment where it’s acceptable to complain about women and crudely talk about sex. Leave a putt short or hit a weak drive? “Come on, Sally! You hit that like a pu***! Nice skirt! Does your husband play?” Hit a putt past the hole or crush a drive? “Whoa! Someone’s wife isn’t giving him enough of the ********! Look at all that extra aggression!” Whatever The Misogynist shoots in a round, put him down for double that number on uses of the terms “old lady” and “ole’ ball and chain.”

Fun Fact: The Misogynist has been banned from 12 courses for trying to feel up the beverage cart girl.

The Rules Official
Description: He has read the USGA rules book two dozen times and has a copy of it in his golf bag that he will display at a moment’s notice. You better not be trying to move your ball out of that mud patch in the middle of the fairway because, according to Rule 13-b(1.4), that particular mud patch, due to its lack of distinguishing marks, does not fit the criteria for “ground under repair.” I mean, sure, if you want to play that way, fine. But if this was the US Open you’d be getting a significant penalty.

Fun Fact: The Rules Official received a severe beating in 8th grade after reminding his math teacher that she had forgotten to assign homework.

The Mulligan Man
Description: He is the complete opposite of The Rules Official. To him, it’s always winter rules … wherever his ball lands, he just finds the nearest and best lie without any sort of obstruction between him and the hole. And then he props it up on a cluster of grass like a tee. Golf’s not so hard! Whoops! Hit one out of bounds again? Just like on the last four holes? Nope! Not really! He didn’t use his 5th hole mulligan yet! And that’s a gimme from 10-feet, right? Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. He’s going to count the putt whether it goes in or not. Put him down for yet another par!

Fun Fact: Despite losing 14 balls during the round, Mulligan Man still managed to shoot 78. Amazing!

San Antonio Spurs Named Top NBA Franchise In ESPN The Magazine’s 2011 Ultimate Standings List

SAN ANTONIO (June 15, 2011) – ESPN The Magazine released its ‘The Ultimate Standings’ rankings for 2011 today and the San Antonio Spurs were named the top NBA franchise and the fifth-best professional team out of 122 total teams from the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB franchises. The Spurs have ranked as the top NBA franchise six times and is the only franchise to have been named the top overall team twice among the four major sports since ESPN introduced its annual survey in 2003.

"It is with great pride that we congratulate the San Antonio Spurs for being ranked as ESPN The Magazine's top NBA franchise for the sixth time," said NBA Commissioner David Stern. "San Antonio's commitment to excellence starts with owner Peter Holt, is instilled in every member of the organization, and makes the Spurs a model franchise both on and off the court."

The Spurs ranked number one overall in two categories that were part of the judging process to determine the best overall sports franchise; 'fan relations' and 'players.' 'Fan relations' is described as the openness and consideration of players, coaches and management toward fans and the 'players' category is described as the effort on the court and the likeability off the court of franchise players.

Spurs Chairman and CEO Peter Holt was ranked as the top NBA “Ultimate Boss,” second overall among sports franchise owners, based on the criteria of honesty, commitment to their communities and loyalty to core players.

“This is truly a testament to the outstanding leadership and dedicated commitment to excellence from our basketball and business operations,” said Spurs Sports & Entertainment Chairman and CEO Peter Holt. “Our success is measured not only by what we do, but how we do it. By once again ranking first in fan relations showcases our loyalty to our community and exemplifies the passion our fans have as the best among professional teams.”

The Ultimate Standings debuted in 2003 with the Spurs ranked #3 overall with the Green Bay Packers at #1. and the Arizona Diamondbacks at #2. In 2004, the Spurs garnered their first title ranking from ESPN, followed by the Dallas Mavericks at #2 and the Green Bay Packers at #3. In 2005, the Spurs ranked an impressive #2 behind the Detroit Pistons, and ahead of the #3 ranked Indianapolis Colts. In 2006, a year after their third NBA Title, the Spurs were voted to the top of the list again with the Detroit Pistons at #2 and Pittsburgh Steelers at #3.The Spurs finished second behind the Buffalo Sabers and above NBA Division Rival the Dallas Mavericks (#3) in 2007. The following year, the Spurs were ranked second overall behind the Indianapolis Colts (#1). In 2009, San Antonio ranked #9 overall and in 2010 ranked 7th.

Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame: The Top-10 Snubs

A band is eligible for induction into Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after they release their first record. This year's finalists were announced Sept. 24 — giving new hope to fans of two long-suffering bands — but the gala will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of fans of many bands whose idols haven't yet made the cut. Here are 10 of the Hall's most notable snubs.

KISS
Could this be the year? When the list of 2010 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced Sept. 24, KISS made the list, despite the fact that they might have been a greater gimmick than a band. Despite the recent surge of nostalgia for the rockers and talk of (God forbid) a new album, the Hall of Fame has never seemed inclined to let Gene Simmons and his posse of masked hell-raisers gatecrash. Maybe 1978's four simultaneously released (and equally awful) solo albums doomed KISS chances, but no matter. Hell hath no fury like an aging KISS fan scorned, and the Hall learned that in 2006 when nearly 200 of them protested the band's snub, many dressed in full KISS regalia.

Their enshrinement in 2010 is no sure thing: only five of the 12 bands nominated will make it into the Hall, based on the decision of 500 voters. Protesters shouldn't stow away those masks just yet.

Def Leppard
If lyric writing and making sense were not part of the job description for a great band, you could argue that Def Leppard is the greatest band of all time. "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Animal," "Armageddon It" — these monster hits off the band's 12-million selling Hysteria album (1987) aren't just favorites of the exotic dance industry, they're unbeatable for singing along with at the top of your lungs. They are also so devoid of meaning that it's possible they were written with an R-rated version of Refrigerator Magnet Poetry. Oh, and if that's not enough for you, remember that Def Leppard has the world's greatest one-armed drummer.

Boston
Bands named after cities just can't get any love. Boston was never a critical darling, but their songs were woven into the fabric of the '70s. Lead singer Brad Delp had a soaring range, which he put to heavy use during days spent slaving in the studio overdubbing and harmonizing with himself. Boston's first album, 1976's self-titled release, went platinum 17 times, but Boston could not parlay that success into long-term relevance.

Rush
Rolling Stone has called Rush fans the "Trekkies" of rock — they defend their Canadian rock heroes vehemently. The band certainly has carved out a place in rock history. With 24 consecutive gold or platinum albums, they trail only The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. But commercial success belies a career that took the occasional wrong turn. Critics cite the band's over-fascination with synthesizers in the 1980s, but fans say the period is simply proof that Rush doesn't care about convention. That independent streak might keep Rush from the Hall, but it doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest — guitarist Alex Lifeson called the Hall selection process a "joke."

The Great White Fire At The Station Night Club

I was watching a re-run of VH1's 100 Most Shocking Music Moments the other night. Having first realized that it's been updated since I last saw it, I was also drawn in again because they condensed it down to a lot quicker show - perhaps eliminating some of the time spent covering the events near the bottom of the list.

Anyway Michael Jackson's death was included this time, and I know it's been several years since I saw it for the first time.

Included in the top-10, oddly enough behind the murders of both Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG, was the tragic fire at The Station Nightclub in West Warwick, RI on February 20, 2003, in which 100 people were killed. The fatalities included headlining band Great White's lead guitarist Ty Longley.

I remember hearing about it, but don't think I ever really researched it even at all. I have ran across a video which is totally worth sharing. It's actually a very amazing video - granted it's a little tough to watch, as you can hear people screaming for their lives, and see people running out of the building on fire - but again it's truly incredible footage:

This video footage of the fire depicts its initial growth and the exit blockage which hindered evacuation. Considered to be the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in American history, killing 100 people, four of whom died after being admitted to local hospitals. The fire was caused when pyrotechnic sparks ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings around the stage, creating a flash fire that engulfed the club in 5½ minutes. Some 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured.

Golf Magazine's Top-100 Courses You Can Play

From bargains under $50 to once-in-a-lifetime splurges, there's something for everyone in this year's ranking of the best public access courses in the U.S.

Way back when, some French guy uttered the equivalent of, "the more things change, the more they stay the same." That's true at the top of our ranking of the best public access courses in the U.S., where Oregon's Pacific Dunes again edges out Pebble Beach for honors among our course-ranking panelists and well-traveled spies.

Perhaps the strongest challenge to Pacific Dunes might come from its sibling, Old Macdonald, the highest-ranked of seven courses to debut this year. As we welcome back two old classics that enjoyed recent makeovers, we offer a tip of the cap to two Top 100 Courses that closed in
Pacific Dunes - Bandon, Oregon

this brutal economy (Beechtree and Reflection Bay). But that same economy has opened up two other once-private courses that make our list.

Clicking on the list below will take you to the full list where you can scroll through it. Also be sure to check out the interactive map they have as well (pictured in the banner image).
