Augusta National - Then & Now

What a cool little interactive graphic to view all of the changes made to Augusta National Golf Club over the years! Here's historyshots dot com's introduction:

Augusta National Golf Club has undergone continuous modification since hosting its first Masters Tournament in 1934. This graphic depicts the more than 100 major changes made to the course over the past 79 years. At the top is a visual side-by-side comparison of each hole for 1934 and 2012. Below the hole comparisons is a timeline that maps tee, fairway and green area changes year-by-year. The combination of visual comparison and detailed timeline provides a sweeping overview of all the major changes made since 1934. (Source)

A Bubba Watson Fan Having a Difficult time being Subtle

Image screen-capped from official Masters video (masters.com)                     Click to enlarge!!

I saw this immediately after it happened, when they replayed the shot in very slow motion. I laughed instantly, and HAD to go back and find it for you guys. It's a ton better in the video, which you can see by going to Masters.com, and clicking on "leaderboard", then clicking on Ooosthuizen's "4" on hole #18 (the first playoff hole) inside the sudden-death playoff mini-scorecard. A 2½ minute video will play, showing Oosthuizen's 4 shots for that hole.

Miss you Dad!

Yeah Masters Sunday was always a special day for me & my Dad. His birthday was April 13th, and his and my Mom's anniversary was April 6th. We were always golfing, at least up until about 2008. Whenever it was Masters weekend, or also U.S. Open weekend, the time with my father was incredibly special. The U.S. Open almost always coincided with Father's Day. Any major as a matter of fact got us going. The British Open is usually right around my birthday, too.

I have no doubt that the most beautiful golf course in the world, Augusta National, probably pales in comparison with the most beautiful golf courses Dad's been playing.

I love you, and I miss you!

Here's Your 2012 Masters Preview

This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. Someone said "if there's a golf course in Heaven, it would look just like Augusta National", and I believe it.

Here are a few good articles to get you pumped up for the 2012 Masters, which begins today, Thursday, April 5:

Tiger Finally Wins!

Image Source (Photo by Phelan M. Ebenhack, AP)

Just in time for Augusta in a few weeks, Tiger finally manufactured 4 rounds good enough to grab a win - his first in 2½ years - at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando. He's won Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill event 7 times now, and appears to be back in the fold.

Click here for PGATour.com's complete leaderboard..

And here's the complete story, again courtesy of PGATour.com (with video)..

Note: I'm really not a Tiger Woods fan. For most of his career I've usually cheered for someone to beat him, simply because I was so against all the media attention he always drew. - (25% of the coverage was Tiger Woods, whether he was in the hunt or not, pulling much-needed publicity from weekly winners while he struggled from time-to-time.) - Not to mention his arrogance during every interview he ever gave.

No, no one in a long, long time has done what he has for the game of golf, I surely get that. But while he was dominating for so-o-o long, my "thing" was rooting for someone to step-up and challenge him. Phil, Freddie, Ernie, Vijay, you name him.

This win is huge for the golf world. It shows he's got his mind where it needs to be, and that he's brought his game back from the depths of no man's land. He also appears to have matured in the sense that he acknowledges the fact that he isn't God's gift to the game of golf (nor women), and he seems to have come a long way as a person the last few years.

Now once again I challenge the field: Are you paying attention?

The Masters Theme Song

A lot of you might not know this: The theme song you're listening to while the Masters is being played every April is called "Augusta" by Dave Loggins. And yes it actually has words. He wrote the song around 1980, with lyrics help from photographer (and author) Frank Christian. They then took it to CBS, which now uses the instrumental version extensively throughout Masters coverage.

"Well, it's springtime in the valley on Magnolia Lane;

It's the Augusta National and the master
of the game.

Who'll wear that green coat on Sunday
afternoon?

Who'll walk that 18th fairway singing
this tune?

"Augusta, your dogwoods and pines,
they play on my mind like a song.

Augusta, it's you that I love,
it's you that I miss when I'm gone

"Well, it's Watson, Byron Nelson,
and Demaret, and Player and Snead,

And it's Amen Corner,
and it's Hogan's perfect swing;

It's Sarazen's double eagle
at the 15th in '35,

And the spirit of Clifford Roberts
that keeps it alive.

"Augusta, your dogwoods and pines,
they play on my mind like a song.

Augusta, it's you that I love, it's you that I miss when I'm gone.

"It's the legions of Arnie's Army and the Golden Bear's
throng, Wooden-shafted legend, Bobby Jones."

Masters week has always been a special week for me. My love of golf.. My love of that beautiful golf course.. Its influence on my golf course design.. But mainly because The Masters is always taking place at the same time as my parents' wedding anniversary (April 6th), as well as my father's birthday (April 13). This year is especially tough since I lost my dad last September, but I'm pretty sure he's watching from the best seat in the house. I always remember him saying "if there's a golf course in Heaven, it's Augusta National".

I agree Dad - I miss you!

Breaking News:   2012 Masters Tickets Available To Public

Augusta, Ga. -- For the first time in decades, Augusta National will make a limited number of Masters Tournament badges available to the public via its website, beginning with the 2012 event.

The Masters has traditionally been one of the toughest tickets in sports, with a waiting list for patron badges dating back to 1971. Only spectators on the club's list are allowed to buy tournament-round badges each year.

Golf fans will be allowed to submit their applications to both the tournament and for practice rounds via Masters.com. The club is moving all of its ticketing online, including ticket services for annual patrons.

"Moving the entire application process to our official tournament website is a safe and convenient way for those wishing to apply for daily practice round tickets," said Masters chairman Billy Payne. "We are also pleased to provide a limited number of tickets for the individual tournament round days, which, up until now, have only been allocated to our series badge holders."

Daily tournament ticket applications must be submitted by June 30, with practice round applications allowed until July 30. Each allocation will have its own random selection process, with applicants notified by email within several weeks of the application deadline.

Until now, practice round tickets have only been available via lottery.

Next year's tournament runs the week of April 2.

Sunday at The Masters: The Leaders

Masters Sunday

Magnolia Lane. Every one of us would love to drive down it, and follow that up by playing on the course, or at worst, getting onto the property to look around. For 99% of us, it ain't gonna happen!

What a spectacular Saturday at Augusta! Phil came within a few inches of eagling 3 straight holes - something no one's ever done. Freddie eagled on a chip-in at 15, and even Kenny Perry provided some late-round heroics.

Now it's all Westwood, Phil, Freddie, and of course Tiger.

Five or six other guys could make history by posting a very low number, too, but I believe your winner will come from those four. Gotta love Freddie & Phil!

An Amazing Masters Leaderboard

Let us all embrace this incredible Masters leaderboard. Three of my all-time favorite players are showing their teeth. Phil, Freddie, and Tom Watson. Wow Tom is 60! Freddie is 50, but that's no surprise, as he's won 3 of his first 4 tourneys on the champions tour. Watson was probably my dark horse favorite golfer as I grew up. Yeah I knew it was all about Nicklaus, Palmer, Norman, Price, and Faldo...

It's just an incredible leaderboard after round-1.

Tiger? Yeah he's right there with his "best Masters 1st round ever".

Sigh.

Have fun!
