A Perfect Case For Complete Instant Replay Review in MLB

OK I've watched this video over and over and over and it appears to me that there is no one in the world who had a better look at this play than umpire Jerry Meals.

With runners on second and third with one out, Braves pitcher Scott Proctor chopped a ball to third baseman Pedro Alvarez who threw home to catcher Michael McKenry who swiped a tag across the leg of the Julio Lugo.

Meals called Lugo safe and the Braves won 4-3 after six hours and 10 minutes. McKenry yelled at Meals, "I got him." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle rushed from the dugout to complain. The call has ignited debate about instant replay and prompted the Pirates to file a complaint with Major League Baseball. (USA Today)

I don't know. The throw beat him by a mile. The issue is whether Meals saw a tag or not. It looks as if he may have missed the first swipe on the knee, but even had a second chance further up, a millisecond later, on the back of the arm. Some of the clips I've watched have a slow-motion segment that shows each possibility in a little more clarity, but no camera angle I've seen has shown me definitive proof that there was a tag. I guess the only two people who really know are McKenry and Lugo.

Nevertheless, here is umpire Jerry Meals' post-game statement: "McKenry caught the ball and made a swipe-tag attempt at Lugo sliding. I did not see any tag. After that I ruled him safe. [But] after coming into the locker room, I reviewed the incident through our videos we have in here, and after seeing a few of them on one particular replay, I was able to see that Lugo's pant leg moved ever so slightly when the swipe-tag was attempted by McKenry. That's telling me I was incorrect in my decision, and he should have been ruled out, not safe." (USA Today)

This is why you utilize instant replay whenever you can. The call was questionable, and upon a first review my any average viewer, it's fair to say that an official review would have been warranted. More so the call itself was a crucial call - much like those in the last 2-minutes of an NBA game and NFL games. C'mon MLB, get with the program, and follow suit!!

Steinbrenner Relished Wacky Depiction On Seinfeld

Even if you never watched a baseball game in your life, there was a pretty good chance you were well acquainted with George Steinbrenner, the 80-year-old New York Yankees owner who died on Tuesday.

Steinbrenner -- or at least a bumbling version of the baseball baron -- appeared on 14 episodes of "Seinfeld" as the boss of George Costanza

(Jason Alexander), the assistant to the team's traveling secretary.

The Steinbrenner double, always with his back to the camera and voiced by series co-creator Larry David -- who had fantasized as a kid about working for the Yankees -- was depicted as a nitwit with a fondness for calzones, Pat Benatar and Cuban cigar wrappers.

"(David) really created this very caricature, this very mercurial personality who's just completely all over the place and neurotic," star and co-creator Jerry Seinfeld later recalled.

In one episode, the Steinbrenner character opines that "(Yankees icon) Babe Ruth was nothing more than a fat old man with little-girl legs."

He then reveals that he is wearing Lou Gehrig's baseball pants, but takes them off after worrying that he could catch the neurological disease that killed the baseball legend. "I'm too important to this team," he says. "Big Stein can't be flopping and twitching."

"If you can't laugh at yourself, then you're not much of a person," Steinbrenner told Entertainment Weekly in 1997. "It also pleases my grandchildren."

Seinfeld and David originally asked Steinbrenner to appear as himself, but he turned them down, wrongly thinking that the George character was a spoof on him. He eventually gave them the green light to use a double.

"I guess they did a pretty accurate job," he later recalled. "Nobody likes to admit they're quite like that, but I guess I was."

Alas, Steinbrenner struck out with his one chance to play himself on the show. At Seinfeld's request, he stopped by the Los Angeles set in 1996 to appear in the final episode of the seventh season -- the one where George's fiancee dies from licking toxic envelopes.

Steinbrenner's character offered to accompany Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to the wedding as long as she lost a little weight. But the episode was too long -- a common problem on "Seinfeld" -- and it was cut for time. David was forced to call his idol to deliver the bad news.

Steinbrenner was actually pleased, telling Entertainment Weekly that he disapproved of the fiancee's death scene. "I felt it was sick," he said.

This is incredible timing. Is it not? Jerry is one of the best. His show was top-5 of all-time. All of this isn't just a coincidence!

Lifelong New York Mets’ fan Jerry Seinfeld will call three innings of the Mets-Detroit Tigers game tonight on SNY alongside a person who made one of the most memorable cameos ever on his eponymous NBC comedy.

Keith Hernandez, the former Met who now does color on the Mets’ TV broadcasts, appeared in the 1992 “Seinfeld” episode “The Boyfriend.”

No word if Hernandez will have any “magic loogie” with him, or the whereabouts of second-spitter.

It will be Seinfeld's first visit to the SNY booth and the first time he and Hernandez discuss the episode in the 18 years since it was filmed. The two have been friendly ever since meeting on the set, at which point Hernandez was the comedian's favorite player. During his radio appearance with Somers, Seinfeld said he wasn't sure if he'd be doing more play-by-play or analysis during his time in the booth. He wasn't intimidated by either.

Joked Seinfeld: "How hard is it to say, 'There's a hit'?"
