Young Girl Catches a Piranha in Texas

msnbc 9/27/2011

Texas is reminding folks that keeping piranhas as pets is a no-no. The warning this week comes after a 5-year-old girl on her first fishing expedition hooked a red-bellied piranha at a lake near Houston.

Lindsay Schutte used a hot dog to lure her unique prize.

"When I took the hook out of the mouth and saw it had pretty big teeth I was concerned, but I'm in Texas so I don't know, there could be fish like that," Christi Schutte, Lindsay's mom and a recent transplant from California, told NBC affiliate KPRC-TV.

But when the fish bit Lindsay's brother, the family decided to notify the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which killed the fish and then froze it for further study.

"An actual piranha is a VERY rare occurrence in the wild — only 2 documented specimens in 30 years — and possessing and releasing live piranhas and dozens of other exotic, harmful or potentially harmful fish species is prohibited by Texas law," the department said in a statement on Monday.

The department emphasized that the Tom Bass Park lake "remains a great place to go fishing and is completely safe to go fishing there."

"We strongly believe that this is an isolated catch," said the department's Dave Terre.

Natives of tropical waters in South America, piranhas are unlikely to be able to survive a Texas winter, the department noted.

The caught specimen was possibly held as a pet by someone who then tried to get rid of it in the lake, Terre said.

The department also noted that a first offense for possessing or releasing outlawed fish in Texas can mean a $500 fine. Repeat offenses can lead to jail time and heftier fines.

Piranhas have a reputation far greater than their size, which typically ranges from 5 to 10 inches. Contrary to movies and popular culture, piranhas don't typically swarm together to gobble up much larger prey in seconds.

Bait

I went fishing this morning, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth, and frogs are good bass bait.

So knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bitten. So I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels, and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes then rolled back, and he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. Whew!

A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth!

Life is good in the South!

Thanks Ryan!

This Just In - Barracudas Are Dangerous!

Press play, then continue reading the post..

Koral Wira, 14, was fishing with her parents and a friend near Venice, Fla., when a barracuda went for her dad's bait and ended up biting her instead. Her dad, Rob Parker, submitted these photos and Wira told the story.

After anchoring the boat 4 miles off shore, Parker baited his rod with herring. Wira switched seats to get out of the hot sun, and watched as her dad cast. Moments later, she heard a splash and saw a long silver flash in the air. A barracuda jumped from the water and opened its mouth. As it hit her left arm, it clamped down with razor teeth.

When the fish dropped off her arm, Wira said the angled bites made her skin look like raw hamburger meat from the middle of her bicep to below her elbow. She was more scared than in pain, she said.

As the barracuda flopped around the boat, Wira ran to the bow and ducked. Her mom and friend climbed onto their chairs and screamed, while Wira's dad grabbed his filet knife and stabbed the fish behind the eye.

Wira looked down at the still fish and couldn't believe it had bit her. It was 42 inches long and its blood and her own spotted the boat's floor. Her dad cut the anchor with his filet knife and they zoomed back to the shore.

On the trip back, Wira pressed her dad's Red Sox shirt to her arm to slow the bleeding. Her friend was crying, but Wira said she was too shocked to be upset.

Parker opened the barracuda's mouth to check out its rows of razor-sharp teeth. He noticed the fish had taken in his line, but the hook never penetrated. Parker said he suspected his bait herring attracted the fish, causing it to jump. When it flew out of the water toward the boat, it found his daughter instead.

Wira and her dad stopped for a quick picture (the banner image above) before jumping in the car and heading to the hospital. Wira said she wasn't in pain at the moment, but she was still creeped out by the fish. Her arm needed 51 stitches, and doctors told her they had never treated a barracuda bite. Her stitches are out now, and she said her arm is healing.

The look on her face in that picture is priceless. I can almost hear her saying, "Dad, I can't believe you're making me take another picture.. I'm bleeding, here!"

Anybody Wanna Go Fishing?

Dude, It's A Shark!

Wait for it!

(Warning: There might be a handful of curse words!)

What a dumb-ass! This ain't a largemouth bass with a hook stuck in its mouth. And even after a full 30 seconds of FAIL, demand the wire cutters! Also demand that someone else cut it out...
