Since I posted this image at the left a few days ago - a shard of wood apparently through a concrete curbing, resulting from the devastating tornado that went through Joplin, MO on May 22 - several different people have pointed out to me, either directly or indirectly, that perhaps there was actually a PVC drain hole in the curb that the wood went through.
I'm still unsure after looking at the pictures, but only because I don't think I've ever seen such a creature - in real life, I mean. But then again, we don't get a ton of rain here, and when we do, we have all sorts of flooding problems, which drain-holes in curbs would PROBABLY alleviate!!
So if you find one other than the one below, send it to me, I'd like to see it.
Anyway the following pictures further explain what I'm talking about (click all to enlarge):

This is certainly just as possible if not more probable than the belief that wood could pierce concrete, although I'm sure it can... right? I don't know, but glad I had a comment on my original post in the first place, because it led me to this terrific post from one of the best places to go for stunning images of what's going on in the world - The Big Picture at Boston Dot Com.
Anyway, here are a few images I've found thanks to doing this update. Neither are concrete, but both are incredible... and guess where both were taken? That would also be Joplin, MO, 5/23/2011 (gulp!):
