Now That's A Big-Ass Catfish!

Angler lands monster catfish weighing in at a massive 250lb.

This monster from the deep has broken the record for the biggest freshwater fish caught in Europe.

Measuring 8.2ft long and weighing just over 250lbs the gigantic catfish was heaved out of a lake after a 45 minute back-breaking tussle.

Plucky angler Roberto Godi was nearly thrown into the water when the brute took his bait of a bream fish.

After an epic battle to reel it in, several other fishermen rushed to his aid to help him lift the beast onto a weighing frame and mat designed to support such beasts.

The scales shot up to a mighty 250lbs 2ozs - or 17.8 stones - sparking scenes of celebration on the river bank.

Not only is the catch the biggest of its kind in Europe, it is also the biggest species of wels catfish ever caught in the world.

It broke the previous European record which was another catfish that weighed 246lbs 14oz and was caught by French angler Christophe Dubreuil on Spain's River Ebro.

Cool Nested Knives

Mia Schmallenbach’s Meeting Knives set features a paring knife, a carving knife, a chef’s knife and a filleting knife tucked inside each other like a nesting doll. The proportions of each knife were determined by the Fibonacci sequence, which earns it added nerd points.

And the best part is that this isn’t another one of those concept products that will never see the light of day. Meeting knives are actually available via an Australian retailer for around $915. A cheaper version with a wooden base will run you about $483.

Kinda strange, but when I Googled this just now, there are a few sites which have the picture, but were posted a few years ago. I thought this was just released?

Lightning Climatology

Where does lightning usually strike?

Lightning strikes the ground somewhere in the U.S. nearly every day of the year. Thunderstorms and lightning occur most commonly in moist warm climates. Data from the National Lightning Detection Network shows that over the continental U.S. an average of 20,000,000 cloud-to-ground flashes occur every year. Around the world, lightning strikes the ground about 100 times each second, or 8 million times a day. Ground-based systems don't tell us anything about lightning over the oceans, although a few science satellites have lightning detectors on them now. There are roughly 5 to 10 times as many cloud flashes as there are to cloud-to-ground flashes, so the total amount of lightning is quite a bit higher.

These conditions most often occur in summer. In general, the US mainland has a decreasing amount of lightning toward the northwest. Over the entire year, the highest frequency of cloud-to-ground lightning is in Florida between Tampa and Orlando. This is due to the presence, on many days during the year, of a large moisture content in the atmosphere at low levels (below 5,000 feet), as well as high surface temperatures that produce strong sea breezes along the Florida coasts. The western mountains of the US also produce strong upward motions and contribute to frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. There are also high frequencies along the Gulf of Mexico coast westward to Texas, the Atlantic coast in the southeast US, and inland from the Gulf. Regions along the Pacific west coast have the least cloud-to-ground lightning.

How often do positive cloud-to-ground strikes occur?

Worldwide, over an entire year, positive lightning strikes average 4-5%. Most storms start with mainly negative flashes, then have a higher ration of positives toward the end of their life cycle. In tornadoes and supercells, large numbers of positive flashes are common, and they appear to signal severe events. Positive ground flashes are often associated with the production of large hail.

A Sexy Stereogram

It's just like all other stereograms.. You gotta focus about 6 feet beyond the monitor. This one is special in that the creator is not only trying to make it sexy (by the obvious array of a nice picture of pageant contestants) ..but he succeeds with the result too. And no, there is really nothing NSFW nor nude here.

Tattooed Eyeballs

Saw this on msnbc's "Lockup: Raw" the other night. These guys used a hypodermic needle to tattoo the whites of their eyeballs. This guy did red. His "cellie" did his blue, because he had blue eyes. The only follow-up that was reported was another guy did his black. And the images were intense! Painful?? Holy cow.. Trend? We'll see..

Signature Hole #12 - La Cantera Resort, San Antonio

Par:4 - 415 yards

Click pics to get better views..

This hole is absolutely amazing. You must keep your tee shot between a rock wall and several church pew-like bunkers on one side, and a steep fall-off into rocks, weeds, rattlesnakes and, well... not a good place to be on the right. The view into the green is one of the prettiest I've ever seen. And OMG that green - It's about 5 feet from front to back and a half-a-mile wide. OK, that's an exaggeration. Probably closer to 8 yards deep by 40 yards wide. Needless to say it takes a very precise middle iron to avoid all kinds of trouble.

Hole #7 Tee - La Cantera Resort, San Antonio

Par:4 - 310 yards

Played the resort course at La Cantera for about the 5th-6th time yesterday with my good friend Rick. I always try to take a bunch of pictures, since the place is just heaven on earth. I also went to every Texas Open from 1995 to 2003, but for some reason haven't gone back for the tournament since that year. It was during that 2003 tournament that I proposed to my wife at hole #16. This year was the first year they moved the tournament away from La Cantera, over to the new TPC of San Antonio.

Yesterday was, however, the first time I've played it since I've had this blog, so I'll post a few of the best ones I have. If you're ever in San Antonio, and you have only one chance to play some golf - you must go here.

This picture is the panoramic views from the 7th tee, which stands about 100 feet above the fairway below. Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park is in the background, most notably "The Rattler" roller coaster is one of the better wooden coasters I've ridden. This hole is also named The Rattler. The green is driveable for the longest hitters, but as you can see there are easier ways to get your par.
